GOING FARTHER PHILLY STYLE OR…..

AFTER A GOOD RUN, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING

You’ve seen them at Broad Street, you’ve seen them at the Distance Run– and you saw them at the Philadelphia Marathon.  They are young, they are strong, and they are clad in lime green and royal blue. They are Students Run Philly Style –a  force to be noticed along local race courses. The only program in Philadelphia that offers marathon training to help young people succeed in life, Students Run Philly Style is teaching young Philadelphians to be healthy for life, make safe choices and do well in school.  They are experiencing first hand what it means to set goals, struggle through them, and reach higher…to go farther

Julian Washington with photo of his late mom, Ziondra.Julian Washington is a 15 year old from Roxborough. Julian’s mother died when he was just 13 years old.  Understandably he has had a very difficult time in school.  His teachers noticed his anger and inability to focus.  They worried that he would end up like many other students caught in the web of city violence.  Earlier this year, Julian joined the Students Run Philly Style team at his school.  His mentors provide much more than marathon training – they give him emotional support and a safe, effective outlet for his anger.  Julian has made significant progress with every step of his training.  Some of his steps are dedicated to his mother, and some have addressed his anger.  But now, his steps are taking him to a finish line, instead of to despair.  Julian recently completed the Philadelphia Distance Run and was featured in the Philadelphia Daily News.  And, his Philadelphia Marathon was a feat he would have never even dreamed of before!

Another inspiring young runner is Shanya Price, a 16 year old from West Philadelphia.  Less than a year ago, when her friends asked her to join the Students Run Philly Style team at her school, Sayre High School, Shanya said “Who me, run? Absolutely no way!”  But coming from a family deeply affected by both heart disease and diabetes, Shanya decided to give it a try.  She started training, slow and steady….and lost 35 pounds along the way!!  With the 10-mile Broad Street Run and the 13.1 mile Philadelphia Distance Run under her belt, Shanya took on the Philadelphia Marathon in November.  “Before I started running, I didn’t feel that good about myself, but then when I ran, I started to feel better.  I also learned some stuff along the way…I learned that my size didn’t matter, what mattered is that I was getting healthy.”  By having the courage to try something new, Shanya has turned her life chances around.  She is reaching higher….she will go farther.

Julian’s and Shanya’s stories exemplify how the young runners from Students Run Philly Style have persisted despite the trials that life has handed them.  Working side by side with their mentors, running has literally given them a new lease on life.  As Julian so often says, “this program has really changed my life…I mean really.
